Dolphin Cottage, The Square, Gifford

Dolphin Cottage is a mid to later 18th century, two-storey, five-bay house located in The Square, Gifford. It is adjoined to the Town Hall and forms an impressive group of buildings that terminate the axis of Fair Avenue. The exterior features white painted harling with painted ashlar margins.

On the south elevation, there is a central door with a small-pane horizontal fanlight above it. Flanking the door are windows in the adjacent bays, and there are additional windows in each bay on the first floor. Above the central window on the first floor, there is a small circular Sun Insurance plaque. At the rear, there is a later lower extension with a roof pitch that sweeps down. The east gable elevation has irregular windows to the right. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern. The building is topped with a coped ashlar stack that retains decorative cans, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
