Description
The Mechanics' Institute on Church Street in Brechin was built in 1838 by John Henderson from Edinburgh and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. This symmetrical building is faced with ashlar and consists of two storeys, featuring a slim central tower. There are three bays on each side of the tower, with square-headed two-light windows that have stone mullions and rectangular hood moulds, and the first floor is transomed with lying pane glazing. The building is topped with a crenellated parapet. Access is provided by a door located up steps in the tower, which also features a slim arched window, a clock, and two tall belfry lights above. The structure includes four polygonal angle buttresses that terminate in pinnacles. On the south front, there is a semi-octagonal canted bay with narrow bipartite windows and a flat roof.
