Description
Barochan House, located at 31 Argyll Street in Campbeltown, is an earlier 19th century building that underwent alterations in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey house featuring a three-bay ground floor and a four-bay first floor at the main front. The front is finished in polished ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are roughcast with droved ashlar dressings. The house has a base course and an eaves course with paired brackets spaced regularly. The principal front is framed by strip pilasters, with ground floor windows margined and first floor windows architraved, featuring projecting sills. The entrance door is pilastered, and there is a cornice above that is articulated at the ends over decorative stylised brackets.
On the southeast elevation, there are narrow windows centered on both the ground and first floors. The northeast (rear) elevation is symmetrical with three bays and features a tall stair window at the center of the first floor.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, and the entrance door is a four-pane timber door topped with an eight-pane fanlight. The roof is covered in grey slate and includes cast-iron gutters and downpipes. The stacks are roughcast with ashlar ends, bracketted copes, and octagonal cans, while the skews are also made of ashlar.
The property has a droved and coped ashlar dwarf wall along Argyll Street, although the railings have been removed.
