Description

Kirklea is a 2-storey, 3-bay classical house built in 1865, featuring a symmetrical rectangular plan. The principal elevation facing Argyll Street is finished in polished ashlar, while the rear and side elevations are roughcast with droved ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, cornice, and a blocking course at the eaves, which has a raised centre and terminal dies.

On the northeast elevation, there are architraved windows with lugged lintels and projecting cills, along with pediments above the ground floor windows. The centre bay is slightly advanced and features a pilastered doorpiece with a cornice and blocking course above that bears a carved garland.

The southwest (rear) elevation has margins at the corners and margins with projecting cills at the windows. The centre bay is slightly advanced, with a door at the ground floor offset to the left, which is masked by a modern lean-to conservatory. Above this, there is a tall stair window, and to the left, a slightly wider window at the ground floor bay.

The northwest elevation contains a single window at the first floor centre bay, while the southeast elevation has a single window at the first floor to the outer right.

The house features timber sash and case windows, with most openings having 12 panes, except for a 24-pane window in the stair and a 16-pane window at the ground floor to the left. The entrance door is a vertically-panelled timber door with a 3-pane fanlight above, and there is a panelled inner entrance door with etched glass at the upper section. The roof is covered with grey slate, piended and bell-cast, and has cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Ashlar 4-flue wallhead stacks are located at the side elevations, featuring machicolated copes and circular and octagonal cans.

The boundary walls consist of rendered and coped walls flanking the house, which are terminated at the outer corners by square ashlar piers with shallow pyramidal caps. There is also a random rubble boundary wall to the rear and side of the garden.
