Description
68 Kirk Street in Campbeltown is an 18th century and earlier-mid 19th century two-storey, three-bay terraced house designed in an L-plan. It features an apsidal stair tower at the rear within the re-entrant angle. The exterior has roughcast walls accented with painted ashlar dressings.
On the northeast elevation facing Kirk Street, there is a base course with a pilastered and corniced painted ashlar doorpiece at the center. Smaller windows are present at both the lower ground and first floor levels in the outer right bay.
The southwest rear elevation includes a round stair tower at the center, which is flanked to the left by an advanced two-storey section that has lower eaves, along with a further lean-to addition at ground level. This elevation features a rectangular window at the first bay on the first floor and a stair window in the tower.
The house has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows in the center and left bays of the Kirk Street elevation, and a 4-pane window in the right bay. The rear elevation has a 12-pane window in the right bay (with a casement at ground floor), a 6-pane window in the stair tower, and a 6-pane casement in the left bay. The entrance features a six-panel timber door with a three-pane fanlight above, leading to a two-panel inner door with two round-arched glazed upper panels and a two-pane fanlight above. The roof is finished with grey slate, and there is a timber piend-roofed slate-hung dormer with a 12-pane timber sash and case window that breaks the eaves in the right bay of the Kirk Street elevation. The stair tower has a cat-slide roof with a lead gutter, while cast-iron gutters are used elsewhere, profiled at the rear with cast-iron downpipes. A rendered and coped four-flue stack is centered on the ridge, featuring circular cans.
Inside, the former kitchen is located to the right of the entrance, accessed through a vertically-boarded timber door in the vestibule. There is a round-arched niche in the hall and a timber spiral stair in the rear tower, which has an egg-finialled newel post at the center and an adjacent balustrade with cast-iron balusters. A timber upper stair leads to the attic, and there are four-panel doors throughout. The ground and first floors have six-panel timber doors and panelled timber shutters, while the former drawing room on the first floor features a coved ceiling.
