Description

175 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey rectangular house, which is the remaining part of an L-plan house. It features an octagonal stair tower on the northeast corner and a broadly chamfered southeast corner. The building is constructed from rubble, with the tower rendered and painted on three sides at the ground level facing east, and it has an eaves course and a band course between the floors of the tower. There is a variety of margins, including wooden margins and reveals on the tower, as well as slightly raised droved surrounds with stugged tails on the east side.

On the east elevation facing High Street, there is a chamfered arris door to the left of center, which has a letterbox fanlight and a panelled door, with a window above it. The tower is to the right and has windows on both the ground and first floors facing east. There is also a window on the first floor at the chamfered angle to the left.

The west elevation features a modern porch at the center, which is linked to a modern single-storey building running west, with a window to the left. At the center of the first floor, there is a broad tripartite window with droved ashlar mullions.

The north elevation has four irregularly sized and positioned windows, including a blind window to the right on the first floor and a nesting box at the right side.

The south elevation contains three irregularly sized and positioned windows. The windows are sash and case style, with a variety of small-pane glazing patterns and barred windows at the ground floor. The roof is covered with grey slates and features a lead-flashed swept pyramidal roof on the tower, topped with a spiked finial that breaks the main eaves line. There is a battered rendered wallhead stack at the center and a brick shaft without a can to the left of the south elevation.

Inside, there is a cast-iron balustrade leading to the spiral stair. The main bedroom includes an ornamented cornice and ceiling rose, along with vertical counterbalance-operated shutters for the three-light window. Additionally, there is a console supporting a beam in the former kitchen.
