Description
169 High Street in Dalkeith is a three-storey tenement building designed by Andrew Forrester and dated 1937. It features a symmetrical, traditionally-influenced design with a five-bay central block that has a recessed two-storey, two-bay wing on either side. The building is constructed from variegated sandstone random rubble, with the west elevation harled. It has ashlar dressings, raised margins, and stugged tails on the windows of the central block and wing doors, along with several decorative relieving arches. An eaves course runs across the three central bays.
On the east elevation facing High Street, the main block has a roll-moulded surround to the central door, which is inscribed with "AD 1937" and features an apron above. There are two stair windows above this door, with bolection moulding and a lintel positioned just below the eaves at the second-floor window. The fenestration is regularly arranged in the remaining bays, with bolection-moulded windows at the second floor, flanked by thistle-finialled dormerheads. The outer gabled bays contain bipartite windows, and the gableheads are adorned with coped skews and scroll skewputts, with the outer corners corbelled to a square at the second floor from a curved angle. The wings feature doors with arrowslit windows above in the outer bays and bipartite windows on the ground and first floors of the inner bays.
The west elevation is harled and also has regularly disposed fenestration. The south elevation is blank, with earlier rubble and pantiled lean-to workshops attached at ground level. The north elevation is also blank.
The building has replacement sash and case style windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, featuring top hopper and lower sash operation. It has gablehead stacks and a ridge at the center, with gablehead stacks on the wings, all covered with grey slates.
