198 High Street, Dalkeith

196 High Street in Dalkeith is a three-storey, 16-bay symmetrical tenement designed by Thomas Aikman Swan around 1935. The building features random rubble construction with a harled east elevation and ashlar dressings. The door surrounds are roll-moulded, and broad lintels are present throughout.

On the west elevation facing High Street, the entrance is located in the slightly advanced inner fifth bays from both the left and right, which are topped with shaped Dutch-style gables, scroll skewputts, and a slit in the gablehead. The outer gables are also slightly advanced and consist of two bays each. The inner third and fourth bays feature swept dormerheads. The fenestration is regularly arranged with various sizes of windows, including two tripartite windows at the ground floor in the central four bays.

The east elevation has a similarly regular arrangement of windows. The north elevation is blank, while the south elevation shares a mutual gable with Nos 190-194 High Street, which is listed separately.

The sash and case windows have 12 and 16-pane glazing patterns. The steeply pitched roof is covered with grey slates, and the ridge line steps up over the central six bays. The gablehead features five regularly spaced ridge stacks with canopied cans, and there are no skews on the main gables.
