Description

214 High Street in Dalkeith is a tenement block designed by Robert J Naismith in 1956, featuring an asymmetrical design with traditional detailing. The building steps up in three bays, starting with a 2-storey block on the left, leading to a central stair block that shares a roof with a 3-storey plus attic gabled block on the right. The west elevation is constructed of cream sandstone rubble, while the east elevation is pebble-dashed, with ashlar dressings throughout. The window margins are droved with tooled tails, and there are smooth quoins. The doors have roll-moulded surrounds, and there is a plain eaves course beneath the swept eaves.

On the west elevation facing High Street, the left bay features a door (No 214) to the left, a tripartite window at ground level, and two windows above at eaves level. The central stair bay has a door (No 212) to the left, with a panel above carved with scales and sheaves, and two small stair windows to the right, topped by a relieving arch above the upper window. The right bay includes a broad tripartite window at ground level, with regular fenestration in two bays on the first and second floors, and a small window in the crow-stepped gable head.

The south elevation, which faces down High Street, consists of three bays with the right bay recessed. The centre and right bays are pebble-dashed, featuring regular fenestration and 2-pane bathroom glazing in the right bay. The centre and left bays are divided at the eaves by a tall shouldered and crow-stepped wallhead stack.

The east elevation is pebble-dashed, with a gabled bay on the left. The west elevation shares a mutual gable with Nos 216 and 218 High Street. The building showcases a variety of small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case windows, with plate glass on the east elevation. It has raised coped skew and skewblock common with the neighbour to the north, which is cut back on the rear elevation. The roofs are swept and covered with grey-green slates.
