Description
Old Smiddy House, located at 4 Braehead Road in Glamis, dates back to 1765. This is a two-storey, three-bay house featuring a stepped, two-bay single-storey wing. The exterior is constructed from coursed rubble, accented with squared rubble quoins and margins.
The southeast, or principal elevation, is symmetrical. It has a part-glazed timber door at the center with a dated lintel above, flanked by windows in the adjacent bays. The first floor features regular fenestration close to the eaves, and there is a carved scrolled corbel at the outer left angle near the eaves. The roof is stepped, with single-storey bays on the outer right side; each of these bays includes a door to the left and a window to the right.
On the northwest elevation, the ground floor has a part-glazed timber door at the center and a small window in the bay to the left, with an additional window in the center at the first floor. The outer left side has single-storey bays with two windows.
The southwest elevation features a gabled design with a window on each floor at the outer right. The windows are timber sash and case, with glazing patterns that include 4-, 6-, and plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates and has overhanging eaves, while the single-storey wing is topped with Angus stone slate. The building has coped squared rubble stacks with thackstanes and cans.
The boundary walls surrounding the property are made of rounded rubble and are coped with rubble.
