Description
36-36A Bridge Street in Montrose is a classical house dating from around 1810. It is two stories high and has three bays, situated in an irregular terrace on a sloping site at the rear. The front is finished in painted ashlar with rustication on the ground floor, while the rear is constructed from squared rubble. Notable architectural features include a base course, a band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and a parapet with a raised central panel and raised quoins.
The east elevation, which is the principal facade, has an asymmetrical ground floor. To the left, there are two round-arched doorways; the one on the extreme left is narrower with a plain door and fine umbrella glazing in the fanlight, while the right doorway is recessed, pilastered, and corniced, also featuring fine umbrella glazing in the fanlights. To the right of these doorways, there are windows with voussoirs in two bays. The first floor has three windows that are symmetrically arranged, each with recessed panels beneath the cills. The parapet is adorned with urns.
The north elevation adjoins 32/34 Bridge Street, and the south elevation adjoins 38 Bridge Street. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate pitched roof with coped skews, and brick gablehead stacks.
Inside, there is decorative plasterwork on the ceilings of the principal rooms, and some niches remain. The boundary walls at the rear are made of rubble.
