Description
38A-38B Bridge Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey and attic house that is part of an irregular terrace on sloping ground. The front is made of yellow and grey sandstone ashlar, which has been cleaned, while the rear is constructed from squared rubble. The building features a base course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, with a central raised wallhead and a pediment.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, with central paired doorways that are panelled and have ornate scrolled consoles and a linking cornice. The doors are 4 and 6-panel designs, with rectangular fanlights, and stained glass in No 38B. Above the doors, there is a centrally located window on the first floor, with flanking pilaster strips that rise to the pedimented wallhead, which also contains a window in the attic storey. The flanking bays each have a window on both the ground and first floors, with later dormers above.
The north elevation adjoins 36 Bridge Street, while the south elevation adjoins 40/42 Bridge Street. The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass and border-glazing fixed windows in the centre bay on the first floor and attic. The roof is pitched with grey slate and has coped skews, along with brick gablehead stacks. There are cast-iron downpipes, a rainwater hopper, and decorative fixtures.
At the rear, there are rubble boundary walls.
