Description
47 and 49 Bridge Street in Montrose is an early 19th-century, two-storey house with an attic, situated in an irregular terrace. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with some areas repaired in render and dry-dashed at the rear. It features a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a projecting eaves cornice, and a blocking course with a central panel.
On the west elevation, there is a pend entrance to the right at ground level, with a central entrance that has a modern pedestrian door and flanking windows. The first floor has three bays that are slightly offset to the right, with the central window being blinded. Above the outer bays, there are two canted dormers that are slate-hung.
The north elevation adjoins 43-45 Bridge Street, while the south elevation adjoins 51-57 Bridge Street. The east elevation features a large, projecting bowed stair tower at the center, which has a window at the attic level.
The windows are four-pane timber sash and case, with the stair tower having a twelve-pane window. The roof is pitched and covered with graded grey slate, featuring coped skews and skewputts. There is a broad and tall gablehead stack on the north side and two brick gablehead stacks on the south side.
The property is enclosed by a coped, squared sandstone boundary wall to the east, which adjoins a pitched roof ancillary structure.
