Description
40 and 42 Bridge Street in Montrose is a two-storey, three-bay house built around 1815. It is part of an irregular terrace on a site that slopes down towards the rear. The front is made of yellow and grey sandstone ashlar, which has been cleaned, while the sides are rendered and the rear is constructed of squared rubble. The building features a base course, a first-floor cill band course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, along with raised quoins.
The east elevation, which is the principal facade, is symmetrical. The entrance is located in the center and includes a rectangular fanlight above a deep-set modern door. There is a window directly above the entrance on the first floor, with additional windows on both the ground and first floors flanking the entrance.
The north elevation is attached to 38 Bridge Street, while the south elevation has a single bay gable end. The windows have been replaced with modern versions. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate, featuring coped skews and brick gablehead stacks.
At the rear, there are rubble boundary walls.
