Description
85 Bridge Street in Montrose is a later 19th-century house that features a single storey, basement, and attic, with a three-bay layout. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar, accented with contrasting ashlar dressings on the front and rubblestone on the sides.
The principal elevation has a seven-step flight leading down to the basement, which culminates in a central doorpiece that is architraved and shallow-arched, topped with a block pediment. The deep-set six-panel door is complemented by a plate glass fanlight above. A gabled dormer with a cast-iron finial is centered above the entrance. Flanking the entrance are canted bay windows that rise from the basement, featuring glazing at both the basement and ground floor, and topped with stone-piended coping. Additionally, there are bowed dormers with decorative cast-iron finials centered above them.
The south elevation is a gable end that adjoins 87 Bridge Street, while the north elevation is a gable end that adjoins 83 Bridge Street and includes a blocked window at the first floor.
The windows consist of four-pane timber sash and case designs in the basement and dormers, including bowed glass, with plate glass used at the ground floor. The roof is pitched with grey slate and has stone coped skew, along with coped brick gablehead stacks. The property also features decorative cast-iron rainwater goods.
In front of the house, there are decorative cast-iron railings that line the pavement to the west and continue as a balustrade to the steps.
