Description
The War Memorial on Castle Street in Banff was designed by Dr. William Kelly and constructed between 1920 and 1921. It is a polished pale grey granite ashlar cenotaph that stands on shallow steps, surrounded by a shallow hemicycle wall made of similar pale granite, featuring some contrasting darker, bull-faced granite blocks. The memorial includes plaques that record the names of the fallen from the years 1914 to 1919 and 1939 to 1945, which are set into the outer ends of the hemicycle. The center portion is made of chequered granite blocks with voids that provide glimpses of Banff Bay to the east.
