Description
Castle Bar, located at 47 Castle Street in Banff, is a building from the mid to late 19th century. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and features a five-bay range. The exterior is constructed of dark squared local whinstone, with tooled granite ashlar dressings. The central entrance, which has been blocked off, originally featured a pilastered doorpiece, while doorways have been added in the second and fourth bays. The first floor has a regular arrangement of windows, and there are three later box dormers.
On the ground floor, there is a single window in the return bay facing St. Catherine's Street. The ground floor windows have 12-pane glazing, while the first floor windows have 4-pane glazing, and the dormers feature plate glass, all of which are timber sash and case. A projecting bowed rear stairwell with a piended roof is also present. The building has corniced end stacks and is topped with purple Welsh slate roofs.
In the rear, there are high rubble garden walls, although the western section has been replaced with concrete blocks to separate the former stables, which are now known as Meridith Mews.
