Description

Seafield House, located at 37 Castle Street in Banff, was designed by Thomas Mackenzie from Elgin and built between 1853 and 1854. This building features two storeys above a raised basement and has a five-bay frontage facing Castle Street, with a return gable and wing extending to Seafield Street. It is constructed from dark local whinstone, accented with contrasting painted ashlar dressings and margins.

The central entrance is marked by a double-columned Roman Doric portico that has a modillioned and balustraded cornice serving as a balcony. The flanking windows are consoled, corniced, and aproned, while the first-floor windows are smaller with moulded jambs. The return gable features a round-headed tripartite window, with two additional windows above that face Seafield Street.

On Seafield Street, there is a slightly set-back, two-storey, three-bay contemporary house that has a consoled pedimented central doorway, which is now blocked and converted into a window. The flanking windows are corniced, and the first-floor fenestration matches that of the main building. The ground floor windows have four-pane sash and case glazing, while the first floor features eight-pane windows. The building is topped with a modillioned cornice, corniced end and ridge stacks, and shallow piended slate roofs.

Inside, there is a Roman Doric columned screen leading to the stairwell, along with decorative cast-iron balusters featuring an ornate foliage design. The former drawing room on the right has a decorative plaster cornice and a grey and white marble chimneypiece. The room to the left of the entrance has a similar ceiling cornice but is divided into offices.
