Description

The Gate Lodges at Banff Castle, dating from around 1750 with later alterations and additions, consist of a pair of square, single bay, two-storey pavilions that flank the entrance to Banff Castle from Castle Street.

The North Lodge features harled walls with tooled ashlar dressings. It has a shallow blind arcade on the west street front, with mid to late 19th century windows on both the ground and first floors in the center. The south elevation has similar windows. This lodge is connected to another building of similar shape, constructed in the mid to late 19th century, with a narrow entrance bay linking the two. It has 4-pane timber sash and case glazing and later 19th century rear wallhead stacks on each pavilion, topped with piended slate roofs.

The South Lodge is slightly lower than the North Lodge and also has harled walls with ashlar margins. It features shallow round-headed arcades on both the west (facing Castle Street) and east elevations, with the upper part of the east arcade infilled with planking above the bandcourse height. There is an off-centre doorway on the south side and a later off-centre window on the east elevation. It also has a piended slate roof.

The gatepiers and gates, dating from the mid to late 19th century and reinstated from Duff House, include a pair of plain square tooled ashlar gatepiers topped with shallow pyramidal caps and a band of billet-moulding detail. The entrance features a pair of cast-iron carriage gates along with matching flanking pedestrian gates, which are bordered by plain harled outer piers.
