27 Castle Street, Banff

27 Castle Street in Banff is a two-storey, three-bay house built between 1820 and 1830. It features a projecting two-storey front porch added around 1860, designed in the style of J Duncan from Turriff. The exterior is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar margins and dressings. The porch is substantial, with canted angles and a long front staircase. There are doorways in the north and south return gables, as well as a long front margined stair window. The entrance in the south bay leads to a staircase that serves the first-floor flat (27A), while the doorway in the north face leads to the main residence at no. 27. The porch has a broad wallhead eaves-band with a moulded eaves cornice, which is decorated in the centre with raised and shaped foliated scrolled ornamentation.

The first floor features longer windows, with timber sash and case windows that have 12-pane glazing at the front and most of the rear. A rear doorway, added between 1970 and 1980, leads to the first-floor flat and is served by a cast-iron staircase. The house has coped end stacks and a slate roof.

Inside, there is a curved stair leading to the first floor, and a hall cupboard that conceals the former centre door to the original two-storey house.
