Description

9 Burnside in Portsoy is an early 19th-century house with later additions. It is a two-storey building with a dormerless attic and has three bays facing east. The exterior is constructed of rubble with some painted margins.

The house features a central porch dating from around 1830, designed in the style of William Robertson from Elgin. This porch is made of rubble with contrasting tooled sandstone dressings and includes a central panelled door with sidelights and a window on the return elevations. The shallow pitched slated roof has shaped brackets that support the eaves. To the right, there is a late 19th-century canted window that rises two storeys and breaks the wallhead. At the back, there is a low two-storey rear wing that likely incorporates earlier work. The windows have timber 12-pane sash and case glazing, with 2- and 4-pane glazing in the canted bay windows. The building has a small gable with single attic lights, a moulded eaves course that briefly returns to the gables, masonry end stacks, flat skews, a slate roof, and a sandstone ridge.

Inside, the condition is poor and much altered, with the only original feature of interest being six fielded six-panel doors.

The garden is enclosed by high rubble walls at the rear and has low coped rubble walls at the front. There is a pedestrian entrance flanked by low panelled gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps.
