Description

The Old Manse in Fochabers is a house built between 1822 and 1823, likely designed by William Robertson from Elgin. It faces south and consists of two storeys and an attic over a raised basement, with three bays. The exterior is harled, featuring tooled ashlar margins and polished ashlar dressings. The central door is accessed by a splayed flight of steps that oversails the raised basement. It has a pilastered and corniced doorpiece, although the cornice is damaged, along with a radial fanlight and a panelled door that has reeded detailing.

The house has symmetrical window arrangements on both the front and back, with single windows in each attic. There are also two later 19th-century canted dormers. The glazing includes 12 panes with slender astragals, while the dormers have 2- and 4-pane windows. A bandcourse separates the raised basement from the ground floor, and the panelled end stacks have moulded copes. The roof is covered with graded Banffshire slate and has a stone ridge.

Inside, the property features palmette decoration on the cast-iron stair balusters, corniced ceilings, some beaded panelled doors, and reeded door frames with angle rosettes on the lintels.
