Description
1 George Street in Banff is a house built between 1830 and 1840. It is two stories tall with an attic and features a wide four-bay front along with a two-story rear wing. The exterior is made of squared dark whinstone, with painted ashlar margins and dressings, while the return gable and rear elevation are harled.
The main entrance has a wide corniced pilastered doorpiece with a central entrance flanked by margined multi-pane sidelights. The door, which dates from around 1900, is panelled. Each outer bay has a later bipartite window with painted concrete sills. The first floor has regular window arrangements, and there are late 19th-century canted wallhead dormers in each outer bay, featuring plate glass timber sash and case glazing.
The house has corniced end stacks, which are shared with No 2 George Street on the east side. The roof is slate with a stone ridge. Additionally, there are high coped rubble garden walls that separate the garden from Castle Street and 62 Castle Street.
