Description
The War Memorial located on Ettrick Terrace in Selkirk was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1922, featuring a bronze plaque created by Thomas J Clapperton. The memorial is surrounded by squared whinstone perimeter walls topped with ashlar coping and Baroque square balustrading. These walls step down to a swept wall that flanks eight ashlar steps leading to the first level.
At the first level, there is a squared and snecked ashlar-coped wall with a shaped design, featuring a semicircular concave indentation at the center. This indentation is flanked by bronze plaques that commemorate the dead from the 1914-1919 war, while a central bronze plaque honors those who died in the 1939-1945 war. Additional ashlar steps on either side lead to the second level.
At the second level, a cross stands at the center, resting on a square ashlar base that narrows to a square-plan stage adorned with an ashlar carved plaque in memory of the men of Selkirk who died in the Great War (1914-1919). Above this is a further narrower square-plan stage that holds a bronze statue to the north, depicting a figure holding a wreath and sword, symbolizing Victory, within a round-arched niche. The memorial features an octagonal-planned base leading to an octagonal ashlar shaft, which is topped with a Maltese cross. The second stage has a formal arrangement of stone paths and pebble-cobbled areas.
