Description
The War Memorial located on Balbirnie Street in Markinch was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and executed by William Davidson in 1920. It is a two-stage square columnar structure made of ashlar sandstone, featuring a crenellated enclosure.
The first stage rests on a plain plinth. The north face displays St. George and the dragon above an inscription tablet that reads: "To the Glory of God and in memory of the men from Markinch and District who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914-1918." The south face features St. Drostan above another inscription tablet that states: "Remember also those who laid down their lives in the Second World War 1939-1945," topped with a bronze name plaque.
The second stage has a raked base and a plain shaft with chamfered edges. Each face of this stage is adorned with a carved shield at the apex: the south depicts the old parish church, the west shows a knight on horseback, the east features a Saltire, and the north displays a thistle and crown. The memorial is topped with a cross finial on a squat square shaft.
Surrounding the memorial is a polygonal ashlar enclosure with a lectern-coped, crenellated design, featuring a base course and four openings.
