Description

34 Balbirnie Street in Markinch is a pair of symmetrical, two-storey, six-bay houses built in 1893, designed in a T-plan and set within an irregular terrace. The exterior is constructed from squared sandstone with ashlar margins, while the rear is made of rubble. Notable features include an eaves course, roll-moulded door surrounds, stop-chamfered arrises, and stone mullions.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical. At the center, a large gable rises above the eaves, flanked by windows on both floors. A date plaque is located in the gablehead beneath the stack. The entrance features timber doors with plate glass fanlights in the flanking bays, and small gableheads with ball finials break the eaves of the outer right and left bays, each containing bipartite windows on both floors.

The windows are modern timber with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the gables have ashlar coped skews with moulded skewputts, culminating in a gabletted center gablehead. The coped ashlar stack includes cans, and there are cast-iron downpipes with decorative hoppers on the left side.
