Description
Beechcroft, located on Balbirnie Street in Markinch, is a mid 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house with a piend and platform roof. The building is constructed of squared rubble, featuring contrasting long and shortwork ashlar quoins and an eaves course.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical and accessed by two steps leading to a door flanked by pilasters and topped with a cornice. The deep-set panelled timber door includes a small-pane fanlight, with windows located in the flanking bays. The first floor has regular windows positioned close to the eaves.
On the east elevation, there are windows on both floors, although the window on the left at the first floor is blinded. A dominant wallhead stack is situated at the center, with a slightly recessed projection on the outer right that includes a window at ground level.
The west elevation features a modern flat-roofed extension at ground level, with windows on the outer right and left above it, and a prominent wallhead stack.
The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case frames, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The shouldered and corniced stacks have ashlar dressings and cans.
Inside, there is an inner hall that includes a screen door, which is part-glazed and features an etched wheatsheaf design.
Additionally, there is a lean-to rubble outbuilding adjoining the boundary wall, which may have been converted from a stable or gig house.
The property is enclosed by semicircular-coped rubble boundary walls and features pyramidal-coped, square ashlar gatepiers. These gatepiers have stop-chamfered arrises and are complemented by decorative cast and wrought-iron pedestrian and vehicle gates.
