Description
12 and 14 Betson Street in Markinch is a two-storey and attic gabled shop and tenement built in 1906 by J M Scott, featuring Scottish 17th century architectural details. The building has a corbelled bartizan and a stone balcony, constructed from dressed squared and snecked rubble with harl on the sides and polished ashlar dressings. It includes roll-moulded door surrounds and stone mullions.
The east elevation has four bays, with three nearly symmetrical bays and an irregular bay on the outer right. The three central bays consist of gabled outer sections, featuring a tripartite window on the ground floor to the left and a tripartite shopfront on the ground floor to the right, which includes a small-pane fanlight and paired doors at the center. Above this, a stone balustrade shields a recessed bay. The gables have paired windows on the first floor and smaller windows in the gableheads. The outer right bay has a transomed window on the ground floor to the left, a wall-mounted post box below, a bipartite window above, and a three-light corbelled bartizan at the right corner.
The building mainly features small-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, with fixed windows at the ground right (Post Office No 12). The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and the building has ashlar coped skews with flat skewputts and stylised baluster finials. The coped harl has ashlar stacks and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.
