Description

168, 170, 172 Canongate in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic, five-bay tenement built in 1876, showcasing a symmetrical Scots Baronial style that combines both commercial and residential elements. The building features a central crow-stepped gable, which is flanked by dormers that have pediments and rose finials. It is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, with roll-moulded ashlar dressings.

At the attic level, the building is corbelled out, with a moulded eaves course that drops below the dormers. The ground floor includes shops with distinctive shouldered architrave mouldings around the doors and windows, and features two-leaf timber panelled doors. The central bay has blind windows.

The upper floors are fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the shops have plate glass fixed windows. The roof is covered with Scottish slate, and there are end stacks that were rebuilt in ashlar around 1965. The building also includes cast-iron rainwater goods.
