Description
St Ronan's View, located at 40-48 High Street, is a tenement building dated 1897, designed in a largely symmetrical Scots Renaissance style. It stands three stories tall and features four bays. The central arched doorway is situated between painted shopfronts on the ground floor. At the top, there is a central crowstepped wallhead gable with an angled corbelled out stack, flanked by a pair of round arched pedimented eaves breaking dormers. The right side has a double fronted glazed shopfront, while the left features paired shops. The building is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone ashlar with smooth margins and has rendered gables. A cornice on the first floor, supported by floreate corbels, links the shop fronts beneath a first floor cill course.
The windows are predominantly 8-pane over 2-pane timber sash and case styles, with plate glass shop windows that have multi-pane glazing in the upper sections. The entrance door is panelled timber with a 12-pane glazed section, and the double shopfront features a margined glazed door with etched glass. The roof is covered in grey slate with terracotta ridges and includes leaded dormers. The ashlar crowstepped skews have beaked skewputts, and the gable features a corniced ashlar design with wallhead stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with internal downpipes located below the first floor.
Inside, the shops have simple timber-boarded detailing. The stairwell is plain concrete with cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail, along with 24-pane timber sash and case windows at the half landings. The front doors are also panelled timber.
