Description

This building is a runic cross, including boundary walls, located on Waverley Road. It was designed by Robert Mathison in 1871 and is a two-storey, three-bay, asymmetrical villa in the Gothic style with a square plan. The villa features gabled roofs with beaked stone crenellations above the advanced windows and entrance. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with prominent vermiculated quoins on the main elevations, while the northern side is made of random whinstone rubble and the rear is finished in painted render. The building has a base course and a vermiculated eaves course, with dormers that have slated cheeks and iron finials. The entrance is highlighted by ornate floreate brackets on the hoodmould, and the windows have stop-chamfered mullions and margins. A small brick addition with a piended roof is present at the rear.

The windows predominantly feature plane glazing in timber sash and case style, with smaller top sashes; however, some uPVC windows are found on the upper floor and at the rear. The entrance door is a six-panel timber design with a plain fanlight above, and there are patio doors at the rear. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, while the dormers have fish-scale slates. Stone skews are adorned with gableted skewputts and detail on the mid skews. The gable end stacks are corniced and canted, featuring rectangular shapes with octagonal clay cans, and there are stone and iron finials.

Inside, there are notable interior details, including fine deep cornicing in the principal rooms supported by carved plaster corbels, and a finely turned timber stair with barley twist banisters.

The boundary walls are tall and constructed from random rubble with rounded copes, featuring small round-arched alcoves. Various reclaimed antique stone ornaments are incorporated into the boundary wall and throughout the garden, including a stone font.
