Description
Meikle's Sawmill, located in Morningside, Innerleithen, dates back to the late 18th century. It features a two-bay, rectangular-plan wheelhouse with a piended roof, situated over a mill lade, along with an associated timber turbine house on the east side. The walls are constructed from whinstone rubble with rough hewn quoins, and there are segmental-arched openings for the lade and tail-race. An entrance is located on the east side, with small former gearing openings on the west side that led to now-demolished open-sided timber sawmill sheds. A remnant wall extends to the west.
The water wheel measures 14 feet in diameter and 7 feet wide, made of iron with three sets of eight T-section spokes supported by tie rods. It includes wooden buckets, pierced drum boards, and spur gearing, along with remains of a timber sluice.
The turbine house is a small shed, horizontally boarded and topped with a corrugated iron roof. It has a door on the south side and a six-pane window on the north side. Inside, there is a vertical turbine manufactured by Hogg and Robertson, which powered a 110-volt electric generator.
