Description
Innerleithen Public Library, located at 1 Buccleuch Street, was designed by Peter L Henderson in 1903. This two-storey, four-bay library is built in the Renaissance style and features a rectangular plan. The principal elevation showcases tripartite segmental-arched windows and corniced segmental pediments above the first-floor bipartite windows. The building is constructed with pre-cast bull-faced concrete blocks that have sandstone margins, while the sides and rear are rendered. Notable architectural details include a first-floor cornice, a continuous cill course, and an eaves cornice that is punctuated by pediments. The entrance is marked by a doorpiece with squat Ionic columns and a heavy round-arched hoodmould. The steep piended roof is topped with a central square lead ridge ventilator. The rear of the building has an asymmetrical fenestration pattern, along with a forestair and a cantilevered walkway leading to the former caretaker's apartment.
The windows consist of fixed timber casements and plate glass in timber sash and case designs, all covered with grey slates. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods with downpipes that divide the bays.
Inside, the library boasts good early Edwardian detailing. The lobby has a geometric tiled floor and an etched glass panel inscribed 'Carnegie Library' on the inner door. A wide dogleg stair with stone steps and a cast iron balustrade leads to a large first-floor hall, which is supported by three laminated timber trusses and features a combed ceiling and tongue and groove dado height panelling.
The boundary walls consist of a low rubble whinstone wall with stone copings at the front.
