Description
Blackness Public Library, located at 225 Perth Road in Dundee, was designed by Frank Thomson in 1904 and is an example of Edwardian baroque architecture. This two-storey library is constructed from red ashlar and sits on a triangular site.
The entrance is positioned at the angle of the building and is approached by steps that are framed by paired giant Ionic columns and an entablature. Above the entrance, there is a Doric columned open pediment featuring a doorpiece that is topped with figures representing learning, sculpted by Albert Hodge. The building has channelled ashlar and a mullioned window above the entrance. The parapet is stepped to create a raised corniced centre block.
The library features identical elevations on both Perth Road and Blackness Avenue, displaying a symmetrical arrangement of five bays. The centre three bays are recessed between engaged Ionic columns, while the end bays are constructed with channelled ashlar and are advanced. The ground floor windows are adorned with keystones that break the pediments, which are alternately triangular and segmental. The first floor is mostly blind, except for smaller windows located in the end bays. The building is finished with an entablature and a balustraded parapet.
The windows are timber cross windows with leaded glazing. The street is bordered by railings, stone piers, iron gas lamps, and low boundary walls.
Inside, the library remains largely as it was originally built, featuring a fine elliptical stair.
