Coldside Branch Library, 150 Strathmartine Road, Dundee

Coldside Branch Library, located at 150 Strathmartine Road in Dundee, was designed by Frank Thomson in 1908, featuring sculpture by Albert Hodge. This Baroque-style library has a concave front and is situated on a corner site. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with a brick-built blind first floor.

The library features monumental gables facing Strathmartine Road and Strathmore Avenue. These gables include a single window with a Doric-columned open pediment and a keyblock, topped with a sculpted open book. Flanking the window are engaged Ionic columns and channelled angle piers that support an entablature and a stepped block pediment.

The curved center of the building has a central entrance that is also twin engaged Doric-columned with an open pediment. The tympanum above the entrance features sculptured cherubs, and there is a swan-necked pedimented timber doorpiece. On either side of the entrance, there is an engaged Doric colonnade with an entablature, and windows with ashlar aprons are placed between the columns. The blind brick first floor has a string course, an ashlar dentil cornice, and a blocking course. The roof is piended and platformed, covered with slate, and features a central louvred ventilator with aedicules on each face and small-paned cross windows.

Inside, the library has a circular lobby adorned with Roman Ionic columns and a dentil cornice. The stair balusters are made of wrought iron, and the ceiling is barrel-vaulted.

The property is enclosed by a low boundary wall topped with wrought-iron railings.
