Description

Rockwell High School, located on Lawton Road in Dundee, was designed by W W Friskin of Allan and Friskin and built between 1929 and 1930. The school consists of one and two-storey brick buildings featuring patterned brick panels and some concrete detailing. The secondary school section is two-storey and has a symmetrical design for the Science and Technical departments facing Lawton Road. It features a central recessed entrance bay topped with a pedimented gable, flanked by seven-bay classrooms on each side supported by pilaster piers with concrete lotus bud capitals and an entablature. The ends of the building are three-bay.

A link connects the Lawton Road block to the Main Entrance via the Assembly Hall, which has similar pilaster piers on the northern elevation. The Assembly Hall projects from the north elevation and is a single-storey structure with seven large windows. A stepped chimney stalk is located at the junction of the hall and entrance foyer. Classrooms to the west are arranged around a polygonal courtyard, with corridors leading to the courtyard elevation.

To the south, there is a primary school that features a long single-storey oblique-angled elevation with a central two-storey administration building. The northern entrance has a gabletted design with a brick chimney stalk next to a short square-plan hall, and there is a flat-roofed corridor on the northern elevation.

The roofs of the classrooms and halls are piended and platformed with slate, while the corridors have flat concrete roofs. The windows are sash and case style with vertical astragals.

Inside the secondary school, the main entrance features a coloured tiled vestibule with a terrazzo floor and a mosaic centerpiece resembling a "fish pond." The corridor plan includes borrowed lights for the outward-facing classrooms, and the Assembly Hall showcases an Art Deco proscenium.

Additionally, there are janitors' houses that are one-storey with attics and gable ends facing Lawton Road. The northern house has a ground floor canted window with a round-arched gablet dormer above, a piended roof with a central stack, and a side door with three square lights below the eaves. The southern house is similar but features a gabled design with a canted bay extending through both floors and a side porch.

The property is enclosed by low boundary walls made of brick with concrete coping and steel railings. The main gatepiers are adorned with concrete Art Deco fins and ornate gates that include roundels depicting ships and aeroplanes.
