Description

St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, located at 9 St Mary's Lane in Dundee, was designed by W W Friskin (Allan and Friskin) and built between 1923 and 1927. This school is a two and three-storey brick building, constructed with concrete band courses, and features a double L-plan layout that adapts to the sloping ground.

The upper boys' level has an L-plan design, with an elevation facing the playground on St Mary's Lane that includes bays separated by chamfered pilaster strips. The elevation on Gray's Lane is a plain 15-bay façade with cement render applied to the upper parts of the windows. The hall block is two-storey with a basement, featuring a polychrome cross wing, and includes a gabletted door in the southern re-entrant. A notable feature is the four-storey eastern stair tower, which has three pilaster strips on its southern side, along with a single-storey eastern projection topped with a coved cantilevered concrete roof.

The lower girls' level consists of a two-storey wing at Burnside Street, which has an obtuse angle. The western elevation features bays divided by chamfered pilaster strips, and a modern single-storey kitchen has been added to the eastern elevation.

On the elevation facing Burnside Street, there are four ground floor windows with blind semi-circular heads, and herringbone brickwork in the tympana. Above these, there are two triple lights situated between three niches, with narrow windows on the sides. A triangular fin leads up from the stair tower on the right, and there is a toilet block positioned at an angle with St Mary's Lane, featuring seven recessed bays between pilaster piers.

The school has flat concrete roofs over the playground, enclosed by steel railings. The windows are sash and case style, with vertical astragals.

Inside, the school features a corridor plan with classrooms branching off. It retains original fittings and timberwork, including a timber boarded hall and reinforced concrete ceilings.

The boundary walls are brick-built with concrete coping and topped with steel railings. Brick gatepiers with concrete Cross of Lorraine caps are located at St Mary's Lane, accompanied by ornate steel gates.
