Description

Ss Peter and Paul Roman Catholic School, located on Byron Street in Dundee, was designed by W W Friskin (Allan and Friskin) in 1930. This two-storey school is constructed of brick with concrete bands and features some Romanesque details, intended to complement the nearby church.

The main classroom block on the south elevation is two-storey with three broad central bays. It has three windows on the ground floor and six-light window bands above, separated by four narrow pilastered bays at each end, topped with a simple piended roof. At either end, slightly lower two-storey entrance buildings feature round arched doorways with banded splays and tympanum, along with diamond paned oblong fanlights.

The east elevation includes a stepped two and three-storey block with a chamfered angled south elevation. This section has two bays of three overarched lights with slim colonettes and herringbone patterned tympanum, along with plain three-light windows above and a flat roof with a railed parapet. There are six round-arched windows divided into two groups of three by a stepped chimney shaft above. The east front is asymmetrically composed, featuring a single overarched three-light window at the two-storey section and a central chimney stack at the three-storey section. Staircases are fronted by tall dark brick arches, and toilets are stepped down to the north. The rear of the building has flat-roofed corridors and a tall single-storey gabled hall, with a single-storey range added in a similar style on Patterson Street in 1934. The roofs are piended with slate, and the windows are timber sash and case or metal hopper with 2, 4, and 6-pane glazing patterns.

Inside, the school has a corridor plan with largely original fittings, tiled dados, and a flat-ceilinged hall.

A detached janitor's house features an asymmetrical rectangular plan, with a dark brick doorpiece that has an arched window above. The east front includes an overarched ground floor tripartite window with a herringbone pattern tympanum.

The playshelter has a flat cantilevered reinforced concrete roof supported by a mushroom pillar, with low brick boundary walls topped with concrete coping and steel railings.
