Description
St David's High Kirk in Dundee is a free mid-Victorian Gothic church designed by James Ireland of Ireland and MacLaren, completed in 1877, with the nave finished after 1881. It has a T-plan layout and features a two-stage tower at the southeast, prominently located on the shoulder of Law Hill. The church is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone rubble, accented with ashlar band courses and dressings. Openings are adorned with pointed-arch hoodmoulds and red sandstone mullions.
The principal elevation features a square-section tower at the southeast with a trefoil-headed Gothic aedicule entrance, which includes carved angel skews and a ringed cross finial. There is a round window at the first stage and angle buttresses at the second stage, which support a two-light plate-traceried window. The parapet is pierced with quatrefoils and topped with angle pinnacles. The main gable displays a large four-light geometrical-traceried window above four single-light cusped windows, all linked by hoodmoulds. A dated quatrefoil wrought-iron finial is also present. A porch at the southwest has a shouldered arched door, and a two-storey stair tower behind it features a steep pyramidal roof, with a stack on the west gable.
The church has a slate roof and grid pattern coloured glass in its windows, with modern stained glass in the main gable lancets.
Gothic wrought-iron railings line Kinghorne Road, accompanied by a retaining wall rebuilt in 1988 with cement coping. The gatepiers have been remodelled and now lack the original gablet detail. Steel railings added beside the tower in 1988 are designed in a similar Gothic style.
