Description
St Margaret's Church Hall in Dalry was designed by architect David Thomson and built between 1871 and 1873 in the Gothic style, reflecting influences from the late 13th century. The building features a cruciform plan and is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished dressings.
The east elevation showcases a three-stage tower topped with a tall broached spire and a finial. Flanking the tower are gabled bays that contain stairs leading to the galleries. The central doorway is set under a pointed arch with moulded reveals and a finialled gable above. The double doors are adorned with large, elaborately patterned hinges. The first two stages of the tower are supported by angle buttresses, while the second stage has triple gabled lights on each face. The third stage features paired belfry openings with clustered columns and a clock set in a shallow recessed panel. The spire is decorated with three tiers of lucarnes.
On the south elevation, there are stepped windows leading to the stairs, which are sheltered by swept roofs that flank the tower. The nave has three tall traceried windows beneath steeply pointed gables, with narrow east bays. The wide projecting gabled aisles are fitted with geometric traceried windows and stone apex crosses.
A later gabled vestry extension at the west end is rendered, and the building has a slate roof with fish-scale bands. The interior suffered damage from a fire in the 1950s, resulting in the removal of all plaster, but some good quality leaded glass panels remain. The roof is supported by arched trusses.
Adjacent to the church hall is the 1888 Free Gothic church halls, which has a roughly 'T'-shaped plan and an asymmetrical gabled front facing The Cross. This structure also includes a two-stage tower and broached spire located in the re-entrant angle at the rear, along with a rear wing featuring tall gabled bays at the cross-wing end. Additionally, there are decorative cast-iron railings surrounding the graveyard.
