Description
Muirhead School, located on Coupor Angus Road in Muirhead, was designed by Patrick Thoms and William Wilkie and completed in 1912. This single-storey school has a rectangular plan with symmetrical projections to the north. The exterior features bull-faced snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It includes a base course and a variety of windows, such as single and bipartite multi-pane sash and case windows. The south elevation and west gable have bipartite windows that break through the wallhead, topped with half-piended dormer roofs. Smaller tripartite six-pane windows are present on the north gables. The wallheads and gables have moulded coping, with ball-finials and curvilinear-gabled entrance porches. The building has a gambrel roof and a large louvred ridge ventilator with a facetted domical roof and a tall Art Nouveau finial. Decorative cast-iron rainwater goods with hoppers complete the exterior.
On the northeast elevation, the design is symmetrical, featuring a slightly recessed flat-roofed bay at the center with steps leading to the basement. This bay has a cross window flanked by smaller windows and a stepped date panel at the wallhead. The gables on either side are advanced and each contains a tripartite window with a relieving arch and an aperture at the gable apex. The entrance porches on the left and right re-entrants face east and west, featuring panelled doors and 12-pane fanlights, with moulded doorcases inscribed "girls" to the left and "boys" to the right. The bays at the far left and right are further recessed, with a window in the left bay.
The east gable is blank, while the west gable has a bipartite window breaking through the wallhead at the center, flanked by single windows. The south elevation has a symmetrical arrangement of fenestration, slightly off-centre to the right, with three bipartite windows breaking through the wallhead, each flanked by single windows, and an additional single window at the far left.
The interior of the school remains unaltered. There are also two rectangular-plan playsheds with adjoining flat-roofed toilets, constructed of cream brick with a piended slate roof and supported by a cast-iron column at the open wall.
The boundary walls consist of a rubble wall to the north with saddleback coping and plain iron railings. There are two sets of corniced ashlar gatepiers, each topped with flat chamfered caps.
