Description

Liff Primary School, built by James Langlands in 1897-1898, is a single-storey, T-plan school constructed from bull-faced snecked rubble with polished ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The building features a base course, tall multi-pane, top-hopper, timber-framed windows, and projecting eaves that reveal exposed purlin and rafter ends. It has moulded bargeboards, a turned finial on the west gable, and decorative timber brackets at the angles. The chimney stacks are corniced, shouldered, and rise through the eaves on the west elevation, with a short gablehead stack also rising through the eaves of the west gable. The cast-iron rainwater goods include decorative hoppers.

The west elevation is symmetrical, with an advanced gable at the center that has three windows, the center window being slightly higher. There is a small strapwork motif in the roofspace. The bays on the left and right are recessed in a mirror image; the left bay features an entrance porch at the re-entrant angle, a panelled door with a fanlight, an 8-pane window to the left return, a swept-down roof, and a 10-pane window to the left.

The north gable has a bipartite window in the center, flanked by slightly lower single windows, while the south gable is detailed similarly to the north gable. The east elevation features a bipartite window in the center and a low modern addition to the left.

Inside, the school is virtually unaltered, retaining its original chimney piece, a boarded dado, and a tiled former cloakroom area. The boundary walls are made of rubble and are located to the east and west, with decorative cast-iron railings and gates on the west side.
