Description
The Free Church on Coupar Angus Road in Muirhead of Liff dates back to 1843. It is a broad rectangular-plan church with four bays, constructed from rubble with stugged and margined dressings, and features a slate roof. The church has round-headed windows with droved and chamfered margins, coped skews with skewblocks, and a corniced birdcage bellcote with a bell on the north gable, along with a block finial on the south gable and a ridge ventilator. The west elevation has corniced wallhead stacks.
On the south gable, there is a modern square-headed door in the center, flanked by a gabled canopy porch and a window to the left, with a chamfered and louvred aperture in the roof space. The east elevation features four round-headed windows and a round-headed chamfered and louvred aperture in the roof space. The west elevation has two windows off-center to the left, an advanced bay with a swept roof to the right, and another advanced bay with a pentice roof to the left, along with a door at the far left.
Inside, the roof and gallery appear boxed-in, with remaining cast-iron columns. Memorials to Rev W R Moncur, the first minister, and Rev John Kennedy are located on the east wall. The north gable has two tall round-headed windows.
Additionally, there is a gatepier and boundary walls, featuring a pyramidal-capped stugged ashlar gatepier to the north, a round-headed gatepost, and coped rubble walls.
