Description

Dronley Mill is a corn mill, likely dating from 1707, although it was probably substantially rebuilt in the 19th century. The mill occupies a sloping site and is partially ruined. It has an irregular plan and is constructed of rubble and ashlar masonry, with ashlar dressings and a slate roof.

The west elevation features a central wheel chamber, the roof of which has been removed, with ashlar courses at the base bearing the inscription 'AD 1707 IM', marking the wheel spindle. A slightly recessed bay is present on the left-hand side, featuring an opening and a projecting wall. A later mono-pitch gable is built on earlier remains at the far left, while on the right-hand side of the wheel chamber is an advanced bay with two irregular openings.

The south elevation displays a gable on the left with a door and a quatrefoil in the attic. The roof has been raised approximately one metre and projects from the main, now roofless and reduced-height mill building. A reduced bay is advanced to the right, adjoined by the remains of a circular building.

The east elevation shows that most of the main building has been removed, leaving walls reduced in height to the south and east. Two adjoining mono-pitch roofed sheds are situated on the right.

The quatrefoil on the south gable may have been taken from Auchterhouse church during alterations in 1775.
