Description

The Mitchell Library, located at 201 North Street in Glasgow, is an Edwardian Baroque public library designed by Wm B Whitie between 1906 and 1911. The building has three storeys and a basement, featuring a symmetrical square plan with later infilling in two parts that align with the facade of the former St Andrew's Halls, now the Mitchell Library. It consists of 18 bays with two 7-bay returns, constructed from polished light ashlar with a channelled ground floor and a granite plinth. The windows include sash and case as well as casement styles, with multi-light glazing.

The main elevation displays a layout of bays arranged in a 3-3-6-3-3 pattern, with a bowed centre and advanced, raised ends. The entrance features a giant order of semi-engaged Roman Doric columns, a scroll keyblocked doorpiece with rusticated bands, a triglyph frieze, a mutule cornice, and a parapet adorned with a seated figure sculpture by John Miller. Above the entrance, there are keyblocked staircase windows beneath a cupola dome, which includes elliptically-headed, keyblocked windows and a standing figure sculpture by T J Clapperton.

The linking bays have ground floor windows that are keyblocked with flat voussoirs, corniced windows on the first floor, and architraved windows on the second floor, topped with a bracketed cornice balustrade. The outer advanced bays feature giant Ionic columns in antis on the first and second floors, with corniced first floor windows and scroll keyblocked second floor windows, along with a dentil band, modillion cornice, and balustrade. The 7-bay return elevations continue the main detailing with the giant order of columns, and there are keyblocked entrances in the west bays.

Inside, the library boasts an open well circular staircase with a stone balustraded parapet. The public areas feature extensive wood-carving, particularly in the main reading room and the Jeffrey Library, along with coved ceilings that include plasterwork escutcheons.
