Description

The Worksop War Memorial, designed by A. H. Richardson of Worksop, was completed in 1925. It is a significant structure made of Portland stone, resting on an Aberdeen granite base, and features bronze plaques, an enclosure of iron posts with spiked chains, and iron lamps.

The memorial consists of a rectangular block in two stages, topped with a rectangular domed cap that has a moulded cornice. It is supported by diagonal flying buttresses, each featuring two set-offs with scrolled feet, domed caps, and cross motifs. Each face of the memorial displays inscribed plaques with elliptical pediments on curved brackets. The south face honors the men of Worksop Parish who fell in the Great War (1914-1918) and includes names from the conflicts of 1939-1945. The north face commemorates those whose glory shall not be blotted out, listing names from both World War II and the Korean War (1950-1953). The west face is inscribed with the word "COURAGE," while the east face bears the word "FAITHFULNESS," each accompanied by names.

The memorial is set within an oval kerb with a dwarf railing and spiked chains. To the west, there is a lectern-shaped monument with a chamfered base, cornice, and scrolled brackets, which commemorates the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. On the north and south sides, there are splayed, carved, and panelled piers, each supporting a three-branched lamp standard.
