Description

Worksop Central Library and Museum is a library and museum built in 1938 by Haslam, Son Holley. The building features ashlar and handmade brick with flat roofs and a shallow dome that includes pavement lights. It has a cross plan with apsidal ends, lower flanking wings, and a projecting wing on each side, all at a single storey and comprising 15 bays. The windows are all metal framed with horizontal ventilators.

The main south front showcases a central distyle Tuscan portico with a moulded architrave and a frieze inscribed "Central Library and Museum." Above the portico is a parapet that displays the Town Arms and a flagpole. This front is flanked by two windows, followed by five additional windows. Each end of the central block has six windows. Above this, a domed rotunda features decorative bands and ashlar coping, topped with a bronze finial.

The symmetrical rear elevation includes a central wing with seven windows, flanked by four windows and single metal doors with overlights. Inside, the library retains original cork wall panelling and bookcases in the former reading room, which has a glazed false ceiling.

The entrance steps are flanked by square stone piers of four stages with vase capitals. The pathway features two similar piers with round caps. A curved brick dwarf boundary wall with ashlar coping is adorned with 28 dwarf piers linked by two metal bands, along with a pair of matching gatepiers that support ornamental metal gates.
