72, 74 High Street, Markinch

This building, located at 76, 78 High Street and 74A in Markinch, dates from the later 19th century and consists of a pair of two-storey, three-bay houses, with shops on the ground floor. The ground level features dressed ashlar stone, while the upper level is made of squared and coursed rubble, with ashlar quoins. There is a base course, a moulded band course, and an eaves course. The ground floor has basket-arched openings for Nos 74A, 76, and 78, and chamfered arrises for Nos 72 and 74, which also have hoodmoulds at the first floor.

On the west elevation facing High Street, Nos 72 and 74 are symmetrical, featuring a deep-set panelled timber door with a two-pane fanlight at the center, flanked by windows, and regular windows on the first floor. Nos 74A, 76, and 78 have a deep-set tenement door with a fanlight to the outer right, a wide opening at the center with a door to the right and a display window to the left, and another wide opening beyond with later infill. Regular windows are present on the first floor.

The windows feature a 4- and 8-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style, although the shop windows have been blocked. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cavetto coped ashlar stacks with moulded cans, as well as ashlar coped skews with a gablet skewputt to the north.
