Description
The War Memorial at Balmoral Castle was designed by Dr. William Kelly and sculpted by Sir James Taggart in 1922. It features a panelled slab-shaft made of Inver granite, topped with a carved cross that includes Celtic braid chip-carving and is flanked by a sword. The memorial is dated from AD 1914 to 1919. In front of it is a free-standing horizontal pedestal table on a granite base, which is inscribed with the names of the deceased and includes swastikas initialled GR on the right side. The base was inscribed by Charles Macdonald Ltd of Aberdeen and has additional names added after the Second World War, dated AD 1939 to 1945.
