Description
The War Memorial at Lower Hillhead in Lerwick was designed by Robert Lorimer in 1923 as a monument for the First World War, with additional memorials for the Second World War added around 1970. The memorial features a symmetrical design that includes a semicircular base made of battered stugged rubble, topped with a white granite cope set into the bank. The cope has scrolled stops on the eastern side, marking the entrance. At the center stands a white granite cross, which has a cruciform plinth supporting bronze plaques. This cross is set on an octagonal base and features a square shaft with shield and sword carvings on each face. There are also later rectangular monuments on the north and south sides, each with bronze plaques inset into their inner faces.
